Standard or bespoke tours

The best way to see Madagascar is to organise a tour before you come. We can personalise a tour to meet your particular requirements and areas of interest. The two tours set out below are illustrations but if there is something particular you want to do or achieve, talk to us about alternatives.

South tour of Madagascar

DAY 1

Arrival at Ivato international airport. Reception and transfer to hotel in Anatananarivo.

DAY 2

Visit to Ambohimanga, site of a royal palace built on one of the twelve sacred hills that surround Antananarivo.

Lunch.

Visit to a crocodile breeding farm. Along the way, visitors can see ricefields and traditional Malagasy washing.

Return to Antananarivo via a scenic route offering spectacular views of the queen's palace and the ‘Basse-Ville' (lower town).

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 3

Travel to Antsirabe (160 km), crossing the high plateaux with the famous red earth and beautiful landscapes.

Registration and lunch at hotel.

Tour of the city in a ‘pousse pousse', a unique Malagasy mode of transport similar to a rickshaw.

Visit to local artisans specialising in confectionary, stonework and products from the horns of the Malagasy cow (zebu),

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 4

Travel to Ranomafana (230 km), named after the natural springs which rise there, via Ambositra.

The journey includes the ‘pass of tapias' and views of traditional Malagasy houses.

Arrival in Ambositra, a major craft centre. Visits to shops and craft workshop/studios.

Lunch

Continue to Ranomafana, passing though eucaplytus forests with wild beehives.

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 5

Two hour visit to Ranomafana National Park

Lunch at hotel.

Bathing in natural hot springs and visit to the Park's museum.

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 6

Travel to Ranohira (250 km), passing through Fiarantsoa.

Arrival at Ambalavao. Visit to a wine cellar.

Lunch.

Continue journey to Ranohira, passing through “the door to the south”, Horombe's plateau and the Isalo massif.

DAY 7

Travel to the Isalo national park (10 km from Ranohira).

1 hour walk through park to natural swimming pool.

Picnic lunch

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 8

Travel to the coastal resort of Ifaty (250 km) via Toliary. The journey takes us through Ilakaka, the home of the sapphire mining trade which resembles a modern-day Wild West, the zombitse park, tombs with Mahafaly art forms.

Lunch in Toliary.

Visit to the shell market.

Continue journey to Ifaty. Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 9

Day at Ifaty, where a range of activities (sailing, diving, etc.) are available

DAY 10

Travel to Toliary for internal flight to Antananarivo.

At Antananarivo, depending on your flight times, several options are available before your tour ends:

- visit to the handicrafts market

- visit to the crocodile breeding park

- visit to the Tsimbazaza zoological and botanical park

Travel to Andasibe (120 km), passing through beautiful eastern landscapes, and a visit to a traditional brickworks.

Visit to animal centre to see some of Madagascar 's unique species of butterflies, geckos, snakes and many other animals.

Continue journey to Andasibe.

Registration at hotel, followed by the opportunity of a nocturnal tour of the park.

Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 4

Visit to the Périnet nature reserve, home to the Indri Indri lemur.

Visit to the Vakôna private park.

Lunch

Travel to Tamatave (250 km), passing through the dense eastern rain forest and taking in a visit to a traditional house of the Betsimisaraka people.

DAY 5

Travel to the port for a journey along the extraordinary Pangalane canal.

Visit to the Pallarium.

Lunch.

Return to Tamatave. Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 6

Visit to local market and tour of the city in a ‘pousse pousse', a unique Malagasy mode of transport similar to a rickshaw.

Travel to Foulpointe (60 km)

Lunch.

An afternoon's relaxation at the beach.

Return to Tamatave. Dinner and night at hotel.

DAY 7

Internal flight from Tamatave to Ile Sainte Marie.

At Ile Sainte Marie, a range of activities and watersports (sailing, diving etc.) are available.

DAY 8

DAY 9

Internal flight to Antananarivo.
